What Has Changed in Denmark Since 2024

Denmark rebuilt its income tax brackets for 2026, cut the electricity tax almost to zero for 2026 and 2027, and has already passed laws that take effect on January 1, 2027. A new government has announced more tax changes, which are not law. The changes, newest first.

  • January 1, 2027 (set by law): Region Hovedstaden, the Capital Region, and Region Sjælland merge into Region Østdanmark, and Denmark goes from five health regions to four, under Act 699 of June 20, 20251314. A new collective-agreement Pay Limit Scheme takes effect under Act 765 of September 8, 2026, with a salary floor of DKK 322,000 a year at the 2026 level1516. The 2027 tax thresholds are already set under current law, including a personal allowance of DKK 55,70017.
  • October 1, 2026: for non-EU students in state-approved higher education who apply on or after this date, the job-seeking permit after graduation falls from three years to one, and accompanying family members, spouses, partners and children, can no longer get permits. PhD students are not affected18.
  • September 11, 2026: Danmarks Nationalbank raised its current-account rate to 2.10% and its lending rate to 2.25%19.
  • July 1, 2026: the Positive Lists of shortage occupations were updated, to 164 job titles for people with a higher education and 63 for skilled work20.
  • June 2026: the new government’s platform announced a tax reform, including abolishing the middle-bracket and additional top-bracket taxes. As of October 4, 2026 it is not law, and we found no bill on the Ministry of Taxation’s news list2122.
  • April 2026: new EU rules for traveling with pets apply from April 2223; the EU’s Entry/Exit System became fully operational on April 10 and replaced passport stamps24.
  • January 18, 2026: new transit fares; the 2-zone 30-day commuter pass for Copenhagen and Zealand rose from DKK 525 to DKK 53025.
  • January 1, 2026: a new income tax structure: the former top-bracket tax became a 7.5% middle-bracket tax, and new top-bracket (7.5%) and additional top-bracket (5%) taxes were added26. The minimum salary for the researcher tax scheme fell from DKK 78,000 to DKK 65,400 a month2728. SIRI’s fee for work cases rose from DKK 6,055 to DKK 6,81029. The electricity tax was cut to the EU minimum of 0.8 øre per kWh for 2026 and 2027, from the 72.7 øre it would otherwise have been (2026 prices)3031, and the fee for registering a mortgage was reduced32.
  • January 1, 2025: a referred patient’s right to treatment elsewhere if the region cannot treat within 30 days is back, after a 60-day period for referrals from June 2023 to December 202433.
  • 2024: land tax (grundskyld) has been collected by the state, through the preliminary income assessment, instead of by the municipality34.
Is Denmark for you?

Who Denmark Suits, and Who It Frustrates

Denmark suits Americans with a Danish job offer, researchers and highly paid specialists, and people with Danish family or Danish roots. It frustrates retirees, remote workers and investors, because it has no permit made for them.

In its favor

  • A simple main work route: the Pay Limit Scheme needs a job paying at least DKK 552,000 a year (2026), with no education or occupation requirement; SIRI’s normal processing time is one month8.
  • Health care through residence: once you are registered in the civil registration system (CPR), you are entitled to public health care, and family doctor and specialist care are free in the standard group 13536.
  • Under the U.S. tax treaty, U.S. Social Security paid to a resident of Denmark is taxable only in the United States, and so are distributions from U.S. pension plans, including 401(k)s and IRAs9.
  • A flat 32.84% tax for up to seven years for researchers and key employees earning at least DKK 65,400 a month in 20263727.
  • Dual citizenship has been allowed since September 1, 201538.
  • Tenant protection: a deposit of at most three months’ rent, and at least a year’s notice if a landlord ends a lease to use the home themselves39; a U.S. car license can be exchanged without a driving test40.

Against it

  • No retirement, digital nomad or golden visa. The official list of application types has no permit for retirees, remote workers or investors67.
  • High taxes on pay: an 8% labor-market contribution on gross earnings, then municipal income tax averaging 25.049% in 2026 plus a 12.01% bottom-bracket state tax414217.
  • Buying a home needs permission from the Civil Affairs Agency unless you are resident in Denmark or have lived there for at least five years43.
  • Permanent residence takes eight years as a rule, with a Danish language test and three and a half years of full-time work11.
  • Citizenship applications are on hold: as of October 4, 2026, the ministry says it will generally not process them until the conditions after the general election are clear12.
  • Rising apartment prices: owner-occupied apartments cost 16.1% more nationally, and 18.9% more in the city of Copenhagen, in the second quarter of 2026 than a year earlier44. Importing a car means a registration tax charged at 150% on the part of its value above DKK 237,400 (2026)45.
Permits

Which Permit Fits You, and What It Takes in 2026

As an American you can visit Denmark without a visa: up to 90 days in any 180-day period in the Schengen area46. To live in Denmark you need a residence permit, issued by the Danish Agency for International Recruitment and Integration (SIRI) for work and study, and by the Danish Immigration Service for family and other cases; both publish their rules on one official site, newtodenmark.dk6. Three points matter for Americans:

  • No EU Blue Card. Under its opt-out (Protocol 22 of the EU treaties), Denmark is not bound by the EU Blue Card Directive4, and no Blue Card scheme appears among SIRI’s work schemes7. Work permits come from Danish national schemes.
  • No EU long-term resident status. Denmark is not bound by the EU directive on long-term residents either5, so permanent residence is a Danish national status.
  • Schengen travel, not Schengen work. A Danish residence permit lets you stay in other Schengen countries for up to 90 days in any 180, but does not let you work in them8.

The pay limits are “regulated every year on 1 January”; SIRI had not published the 2027 amounts as of October 4, 20268.

Salary check

Does Your Danish Job Offer Meet the Pay Limit?

Choose the scheme and enter the annual salary in your job offer, in kroner or dollars. The Pay Limit Scheme needs DKK 552,000 and the Supplementary Pay Limit Scheme DKK 446,000 a year at the 2026 level847; the collective-agreement scheme, which starts on January 1, 2027, needs DKK 322,000 at the 2026 level16. We compare to the exact øre (a hundredth of a krone). Dollars use the Danmarks Nationalbank rate of October 2, 2026 (USD 1 = DKK 6.658)1.

A salary check only, at the 2026 levels; the amounts are adjusted each January 1, so check SIRI’s page for the year you apply. Only cash salary, guaranteed supplements, labor-market pension contributions and paid holiday allowance count; a company car, phone or housing does not. The work must be at least 30 hours a week, and the salary paid into a Danish bank account8. The supplementary scheme also needs the job advertisement, full-time work and the unemployment condition47; the collective-agreement scheme needs a certified employer, a designated collective agreement and citizenship of a listed country16. Meeting a figure does not mean a permit will be granted.

Applying from the United States

Applications made in the United States are handled by the Danish Consulate General in New York59. You give your biometrics, fingerprints and a photo, at a VFS Global center in Boston, Chicago, Houston, Los Angeles, Miami, New York, San Francisco or Washington60, no later than 14 days after you submit an online application8. Besides SIRI’s fee, the Consulate General charges its own service fee, paid in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs’ webshop; its page does not state the amount, so ask when you book59.

Applying from inside Denmark. SIRI’s guidance says that a visa-exempt American who is lawfully in Denmark can submit a residence application there, and that work applications, such as the Pay Limit and Fast-Track schemes, can be processed during this “procedural stay”. This is not possible for study, au pair, interns, volunteers, working holiday or accompanying family members61. That page was last updated on June 1, 2019; confirm with SIRI before you plan on it.

No retirement visa, and no digital nomad visa

We read the full list of application types on newtodenmark.dk on October 4, 2026. It has no retirement, passive-income or “own means” permit. The only category for retirees is narrow: a retired employee of an international organization in Denmark who is over 60 and has lived in Denmark for more than 12 years662. Nor does the list of 19 work schemes include a digital nomad or remote-work permit; the general rule is that “a foreign national, who will be working in Denmark, must have a work permit”763. We found no investor or golden visa, and no general permit for the self-employed besides Start-up Denmark649. The Working Holiday scheme is open to young citizens of Argentina, Australia, Canada, Chile, Japan, New Zealand and South Korea, not the United States6.

A question to put to SIRI, not a rule we can state. We found no official Danish page that says whether an American who works remotely for a U.S. employer during a visa-free stay needs a Danish work permit; we found only the general rule quoted above63. If you plan to work from Denmark, even for a few weeks, ask SIRI before you go. The Fast-Track Scheme is the one route that expressly lets employees of certified companies work both in Denmark and abroad50.

For someone who will neither work nor study in Denmark, the routes described below are family (a Danish spouse or partner) and ancestry (Danish parents or grandparents, or a former Danish citizenship).

The Pay Limit Scheme

The Pay Limit Scheme (beløbsordningen) is the route for an American with a Danish job offer in any field. The Aliens Act sets a base of DKK 400,000 a year, adjusted each year to follow wage growth; for 2026 that is DKK 552,000648.

  • Any field: “It is not required that you have a specific educational background or that your job is within a specific professional field.” The work must be at least 30 hours a week8.
  • What counts as salary: cash salary, guaranteed supplements, labor-market pension contributions and paid holiday allowance. Benefits in kind, such as a car, a phone or housing, do not count8.
  • A Danish bank account: your salary must be paid into an account in your own name at a bank operating legally in Denmark, opened within 180 days of the permit being granted, or of your entry if later8.
  • Length: normally four years if your job is for four years or more, otherwise the length of the contract; then you apply to extend8.
  • Start: if you apply from abroad, the permit can start one month before your job, if you declare you can support yourself and your family in that time; otherwise 14 days before8.
  • Family: your spouse, registered or cohabiting partner and children under 18 living at home can get permits as accompanying family; the fee is DKK 3,080 (2026)849.
  • Keep your Danish address: you must not give up your Danish address or stay abroad for more than six months in a row, or the permit lapses8.

The Supplementary Pay Limit Scheme

A lower salary floor, DKK 446,000 a year at the 2026 level, with more conditions: the job must have been posted on both Jobnet and EURES for at least two weeks before you apply, and the work must be full-time47. It is open only while national seasonally adjusted gross unemployment, averaged over three months, is 3.75% or less; SIRI’s figure published on September 30, 2026 was 3.1% for June to August 20264765. The permit can run for up to five years, where the Pay Limit Scheme page says four; we report each as SIRI states it478.

The Fast-Track Scheme and the Positive Lists

The Fast-Track Scheme is for employees of companies that SIRI has certified; a company needs at least 10 full-time permanent employees in Denmark to be certified66. It has five tracks: the pay limit, the supplementary pay limit, short-term work of up to three months, researchers and education. The employer can apply for you under a power of attorney50.

The Positive Lists name occupations where Denmark is short of labor. The list for people with a higher education had 164 job titles and the list for skilled work 63 from July 1, 202620. You need a job on a list, the required education, often “at least three years education at bachelor level” for the higher-education list, and pay and conditions that meet Danish standards52. The skilled-work list is updated on January 1 and July 1 each year51. To judge whether pay meets Danish standards, SIRI uses quarterly income statistics; applications made after September 30, 2026 are assessed against the figures for the second quarter of 202667.

From January 1, 2027: the collective-agreement Pay Limit Scheme

Parliament adopted a new scheme on September 3, 2026 by 92 votes to 18; it is Act 765 of September 8, 2026 and takes effect on January 1, 202715. It allows a minimum salary of DKK 322,000 a year (2026 level), about $48,363, for a job covered by a collective agreement the minister designates, at a company certified for this scheme, while unemployment stays below a level the minister sets16. A company needs at least 10 full-time employees in Denmark and annual accounts within the last two years; certification lasts three years at first16. A Fast-Track certification does not give access to it66.

Is the United States on the list? The scheme is only for citizens of countries on a list the minister publishes. The bill’s explanatory notes name the United States among the ten countries on the list “as of January 1, 2026”68. As of October 4, 2026, we had not seen the minister’s published list, the unemployment level or a SIRI application page for the scheme; check SIRI before you rely on it.

Researchers

A researcher permit needs a paid research position, with “particular research related reasons” for offering it to you; the normal processing time is one month, up to two, and the permit can last up to four years53. Researchers and highly paid employees may also be able to use the special tax scheme described under taxes37.

Your own business: Start-up Denmark

Start-up Denmark is the only route for founding a business. An expert panel appointed by the Danish Business Authority must approve your idea, which must be innovative: restaurants, retail stores, smaller trade and import or export businesses are normally not approved. At most 75 people a year can get a permit, teams of up to three can apply, and you must own the business and work in it actively54. You must show funds for the first year: SIRI’s pages give DKK 153,240 for a single person, DKK 306,480 with a spouse, DKK 356,904 with a spouse and children and DKK 203,664 with children only, all marked “2025 level” as of October 4, 2026, while SIRI’s other amounts are already at the 2026 level5455. Check the current figure before you apply. The first permit lasts up to two years and can be extended up to three years at a time54.

Study

Higher-education students need full-time admission. They may work 90 hours a month from September to May and full-time in June, July and August56. Where funds must be shown, for example by exchange students or full-degree students with a tuition waiver, the amount is DKK 7,426 a month (2026); full-degree students who have paid tuition do not have to show funds55. For applications made on or after October 1, 2026, the job-seeking permit after graduation is one year instead of three, and accompanying family members, spouses, partners and children, can no longer get permits; PhD students are not affected18.

Married to, or living with, a Dane

The spouse or cohabiting partner of a Danish citizen or permanent resident can apply for family reunification. Both of you normally need to be at least 24, and cohabitation counts after 18 months at the same address57. Together you must meet 4 of 6 integration-related conditions, one of which is mandatory for the partner in Denmark: passing Prøve i Dansk 3, or five years of work with significant Danish communication. The applicant must have visited Denmark at least once, and the partner in Denmark normally posts a financial guarantee of DKK 61,709.34 (2026), about $9,26857. The fee is DKK 8,490 (2026), the expected maximum processing time 10 months, and the permit is typically valid for two years, renewable; you may work57.

Danish roots: former citizens and descendants

  • Former Danish citizens are granted a residence permit on application under section 9 d of the Aliens Act, unless their citizenship was taken away under the Citizenship Act6458.
  • Danish descent: a permit is normally granted if both of your parents, or all four of your grandparents, are or were Danish citizens by birth; one Danish parent may be enough “in very special cases” with strong ties58.
  • The first permit is typically for one year, renewable, and you may work. Permanent residence is possible after one year for former citizens and two years for people with two Danish-born parents (or, in very special cases, one), if you meet certain requirements5869.

After the first permit: permanent residence

Permanent residence normally needs eight years of legal residence with a temporary permit, or four years if you meet all four supplementary requirements11. The basic requirements include11:

  • Age 18 or over, and a pass in Prøve i Dansk 2, a Danish language test.
  • At least 3 years and 6 months of regular full-time work or self-employment in the four years before the decision, and work at the time of the decision.
  • No social assistance in the last four years, no overdue public debt (a deferred debt of up to DKK 143,100.98 is allowed), and no convictions that bar permanent residence; you sign a declaration.
  • Supplementary requirements, at least two of four: Prøve i Dansk 3; four years of full-time work in the last four and a half; the active-citizen exam or a year of active citizenship; and an average taxable income of DKK 346,155.57 (2026) over the last two years.

People who have reached the Danish state pension age are exempt from the work and income requirements and can get permanent residence after eight years if they meet one other supplementary requirement, Prøve i Dansk 3 or active citizenship11. The fee is DKK 7,570 (2026) on a work or study basis and the expected maximum processing time 12 months; you normally must still live in Denmark when the decision is made11.

Citizenship: by act of Parliament, and on hold

A foreign national can become a Danish citizen only by an act of Parliament. Naturalization bills are normally tabled twice a year, in April and October, but none was tabled in October 202570. As of October 4, 2026, the Ministry of Immigration and Integration says it will, as a rule, not process citizenship applications until it is clear, after the general election, which conditions are to apply12. The conditions in the circular still in force are71:

  • Nine years of uninterrupted residence in Denmark (six to eight for spouses of Danish citizens), and two years of permanent residence by the end of the month the bill is expected to pass7172.
  • As a rule, Prøve i Dansk 3 and the citizenship test of 2021 (Indfødsretsprøven)7374.
  • Three and a half years of full-time work in the last four years, and self-support7576.
  • A first application costs DKK 6,270 (2026)77.

Denmark has accepted dual citizenship since September 1, 201538. The conditions may change once the new rules are set; check the ministry’s page before you plan around them.

General information, not advice. Quantum Jetset does not give legal, tax, immigration, financial or investment advice. SIRI and the Danish Immigration Service decide each case; check the official page for your route and, if your case is not simple, speak to a Danish immigration lawyer.

Step by step

The Order of Operations, Step by Step

The sequence below is for a first work permit under the Pay Limit Scheme, applied for from the United States859. Adjust it for your route.

  1. Choose the route by what you will live on: a Danish job points to the Pay Limit, Supplementary, Fast-Track or Positive List schemes, research to the researcher permit, an innovative business to Start-up Denmark, a Danish partner to family reunification, and Danish parents or grandparents to the descent rules7545758.
  2. Check the salary with the calculator above, and check SIRI’s page for the amount in force in the year you apply8.
  3. Apply online and pay SIRI’s fee (DKK 6,810 in 2026; it changes each January 1), then have your biometrics recorded at a VFS Global center within 14 days860. Pay the Consulate General’s separate service fee in the webshop59.
  4. Allow the full processing time. For the Pay Limit Scheme, plan on three months, the most SIRI gives if more information is needed; do not book a move that assumes a faster answer48.
  5. Arrive and register for a CPR number at an International Citizen Service center or your local Citizen Service, if you are staying more than three months; you need your residence permit first7879.
  6. Get your yellow health card, which arrives about two to three weeks after you register, and choose a family doctor8081.
  7. Set up MitID, the national digital ID, in the app or at Citizen Service82.
  8. Get your tax card before your first paycheck; without one, 55% is withheld. You can apply no earlier than one month before you start work83.
  9. Open a Danish bank account within 180 days of the permit, or of your entry if later, and register your NemKonto for public payments884.
  10. Report any move to a new address no later than five days after moving85.
  11. Watch the driving deadline: you may drive on your U.S. license for up to 180 days after taking up residence, then you must exchange it86.
  12. Plan the extension before your permit ends, and keep your Danish address: more than six months in a row abroad makes the permit lapse8.
Cost of living

What Things Cost, From Official Figures

Denmark uses the Danish krone (DKK), not the euro. Danmarks Nationalbank keeps it pegged to the euro in the EU’s exchange-rate mechanism, ERM II, at a central rate of DKK 746.038 per EUR 100, within a band of plus or minus 2.25%2. Dollar figures on this page use the Nationalbank’s rate of October 2, 2026: USD 1 = DKK 6.658 (and EUR 1 = DKK 7.4736)1. Your costs are in kroner, so their dollar value moves with the dollar’s rate against the euro.

Consumer prices were 2.0% higher in August 2026 than a year earlier (1.7% in July), and core inflation, without energy and unprocessed food, was 2.2%87. Within housing, rents rose 2.5% and gas 14.1%, while electricity was 17.9% cheaper than a year earlier, after the electricity tax cut88. Rent is the largest item in the index, with a weight of 20.75%87.

Rents: what the official statistics cover

We found no official, current statistic of private-market rents by town. Statistics Denmark publishes a rent index by region, which shows how fast rents change, not what they are89. The only official rent levels by municipality come from Landsbyggefonden, the national fund for social housing, and they cover social (almene) housing only: the rent actually paid on January 1, 2026, which may include water, heating and electricity90. Social housing is open to anyone, but the newcomer portal says it is “often difficult to obtain for foreign nationals because they are usually let out on the basis of a waiting list”, and that its rent “is typically lower than for other types of rental accommodation”85. Read the table as a floor for planning, not as what a landlord will ask you.

Source: Landsbyggefonden, Huslejestatistik 2026, tables 7 and 9D90. The national average for all social housing was DKK 986 per m² a year in 2026, 3.1% more than in 2025; Landsbyggefonden’s own example puts a 79 m² family dwelling at about DKK 6,320 a month90. Statistics Denmark’s rent index rose 2.7% for all rented housing and 2.5% for privately owned rental housing in the year to the second quarter of 2026; in Region Hovedstaden both rose 3.2%89.

What Social-Housing Rent Comes To for Your Size

Choose a municipality, the type of dwelling and the floor area. The estimate multiplies Landsbyggefonden’s average annual rent per square meter in social housing by your area and divides by 1290, then converts at the Danmarks Nationalbank rate of October 2, 20261.

An average for social housing, which is allocated through waiting lists; it is not an offer, and it is not a private-market rent. The rent paid may include water, heating and electricity. By our arithmetic: 77 m² at Copenhagen’s DKK 1,077 for family dwellings comes to DKK 6,910.75 a month.

Pay

Average standardized monthly earnings for all employees were DKK 52,846 in 2025, about $7,937, including pension contributions and benefits; in Region Hovedstaden DKK 57,773, in Midtjylland 50,316, Syddanmark 49,835, Sjælland 49,114 and Nordjylland 48,20991. The median hourly earnings were DKK 361.6891. Earnings grew 3.2% in the year to the second quarter of 202692. Denmark has no statutory minimum wage; pay is set by collective agreements or negotiated individually93.

Electricity

Parliament cut the electricity tax to the EU minimum of 0.8 øre per kWh from January 1, 2026 to December 31, 2027, from the 72.7 øre it would otherwise have been (2026 prices); from January 1, 2028 the normal rate returns3031. The Danish Utility Regulator’s average household price, for 4,000 kWh a year including VAT and subscriptions, was 193.0 øre per kWh (DKK 1.93, about $0.29) in August 2026, against 234.6 øre in August 2025; 187.3 øre in West Denmark and 201.6 in East Denmark, which includes Copenhagen94.

Public transit

Each region has its own operator and zones. A 30-day commuter pass (pendlerkort) for two zones costs DKK 530 in Copenhagen and Zealand and DKK 435 in the other cities below; a commuter pass is valid on the Copenhagen Metro only with a Metro supplement of DKK 70 a month (DKK 600 in all for two zones), and Rejsekort trips on the Metro cost DKK 1.75 extra2595969798.

Interest rates

Danmarks Nationalbank’s current-account rate has been 2.10% and its lending rate 2.25% since September 11, 202619. Danish mortgage rates are set by the lenders, not by the Nationalbank.

Health care

Public Health Care Through Residence, and the Medicare Question

Denmark’s public health insurance is residence-based: “If you are living in Denmark and are registered in the Danish Civil Registration System, you are entitled to all public healthcare benefits”35. Everyone registered in the population register is covered and gets a health card36.

How you join

  • Residence permit first. As a non-EU citizen you need a residence permit before you can get a CPR number79.
  • The yellow health card (sundhedskort) shows your name, address, CPR number and family doctor. One page of the newcomer portal says it arrives about two weeks after you register, another two to three weeks; plan on three8081.
  • Before you are registered, the region charges visitors who are not resident for hospital care, both emergency and continued treatment, with exceptions under EU and Nordic rules and for children under 1899. Keep travel medical insurance until your CPR registration is done.

We found no general requirement to hold private health insurance for a Danish residence permit on the pages we read; check the page for your own permit.

Group 1 or group 2

In group 1, the standard group, you are registered with one family doctor, and you need a referral for specialists, except ear, nose and throat doctors, eye doctors, dentists and chiropractors; the region pays for family doctor and specialist care. In group 2 you may see any doctor or specialist without a referral, but you receive only the subsidy that group 1 would get and pay the rest. You can switch groups, but not again for a year36.

What you pay

  • Family doctor and specialist visits in group 1: free36.
  • Prescription medicine: a co-payment that falls as your yearly spending rises. In 2026 an adult pays the first DKK 1,135 in full, then gets subsidies of 50%, 75% and 85%, and 100% above DKK 22,596; the most an adult or child pays in a year is DKK 4,850, about $728. Children under 18 get a 60% subsidy from the first krone. The thresholds are adjusted each January; the 2027 figures had not been published as of October 4, 2026100.
  • Dentists, physiotherapy and psychologists: only partial subsidies36.

Emergencies and out-of-hours care

Call 112 in a life-threatening emergency101. For urgent illness outside your doctor’s hours, call your region’s out-of-hours number before going to an emergency department:

  • Capital Region, part of Region Østdanmark from January 1, 2027 (Copenhagen, Frederiksberg, Helsingør): 1813 as of October 202610113.
  • Region Zealand, part of Region Østdanmark from January 1, 2027 (Roskilde): 1818 as of October 202610213.
  • Central Denmark Region (Aarhus): 70 11 31 31, weekdays 4 p.m. to 8 a.m., and around the clock at weekends and on holidays103.
  • Region of Southern Denmark (Odense, Esbjerg, Kolding, Vejle): 70 11 07 07, 4 p.m. to 8 a.m. and at weekends and on holidays104.
  • North Denmark Region (Aalborg): 70 150 300, 4 p.m. to 8 a.m.105

From January 1, 2027, four regions instead of five. The Capital Region and Region Zealand merge into Region Østdanmark on that date, under Act 699 of June 20, 202513. As of October 4, 2026, we found no official statement on whether the 1813 and 1818 numbers continue unchanged after the merger; check the region’s website after January 1, 2027.

Waiting times and your rights

A patient referred to a hospital has the right to be assessed within 30 days if medically possible, and to use a private or other hospital if the region cannot offer treatment within 30 days33. That 30-day limit applies again from January 1, 2025, after a 60-day period for referrals between June 2023 and December 202433. We could not reach the official waiting-time statistics, so we give no figures for actual waits. The Ministry of Health and Ecclesiastical Affairs says a new fee structure for family doctors is to take effect in 2027; it does not describe effects for patients106.

Medicare does not follow you

Medicare generally does not pay for care outside the United States, and Medicare drug plans do not cover prescriptions bought abroad107. Most Medigap plans include foreign travel emergency coverage, but it pays 80% after a $250 deductible, up to $50,000 in a lifetime, and only for emergencies that start in the first 60 days of a trip108. That is travel coverage, not residence coverage.

Whether to keep paying the Part B premium ($202.90 a month in 2026) is a real decision: if you drop Part B and re-enroll later, the premium rises by 10% for each full 12-month period you could have been enrolled but were not, usually for life109. Decide with your whole plan in view.

Taxes for Americans

Two Tax Systems, With a Treaty Between Them

Moving to Denmark adds a second tax system; it does not remove the first while you remain a U.S. citizen. The United States taxes its citizens on worldwide income wherever they live110. The two countries have an income tax treaty, signed on August 19, 1999 and amended by a protocol signed on May 2, 20069111, and a Social Security totalization agreement, signed on June 13, 2007 and in force since October 1, 200810. What follows is the map; the route is a job for a cross-border tax adviser.

When you become tax resident

You are fully liable to Danish income tax if you have a home (bopæl) in Denmark, or if you stay in Denmark for at least six months, counting short trips abroad for holidays and the like112. From then on you are taxed on your worldwide income, and you must report your balances in non-Danish accounts, non-Danish securities, non-Danish pension schemes, non-Danish property and non-Danish income. The deadline to report or correct your tax assessment notice is July 1 of the following year113.

Income tax for 2026

A Danish salary carries several layers41172642:

  • Labor-market contribution (AM-bidrag): 8% of gross earned income, before income tax41.
  • Municipal income tax: set by each municipality. The 2026 average is 25.049%; rates run from 23.39% in Copenhagen to 26.30% in the highest-taxed municipalities, such as Lolland and Svendborg42114.
  • Bottom-bracket state tax: 12.01% of personal income above the personal allowance of DKK 54,1001726.
  • Middle-bracket tax (the former top-bracket tax): 7.5% of personal income above DKK 641,200 after the labor-market contribution26.
  • Top-bracket tax: 7.5% above DKK 777,900; additional top-bracket tax: 5% above DKK 2,592,70026.
  • Church tax only if you are a member of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Denmark: on average 0.867% in 2026, from 0.38% in Gentofte to 1.30% on Læsø42114.
  • Employment allowance: 12.75% of earned income, at most DKK 63,300 in 2026, deducted in your taxable income115116.

A tax ceiling of 44.57% (52.07% in 2025) limits the combined rate of the bottom-bracket, middle-bracket and municipal taxes: where they add up to more, the middle-bracket rate is cut by the difference. The top-bracket and additional top-bracket taxes are not part of that sum, and church tax and the labor-market contribution are outside the ceiling117118. The 2027 thresholds are already set under current law: a personal allowance of DKK 55,700, and the middle, top and additional top brackets from DKK 659,900, DKK 800,500 and DKK 2,668,20017.

Estimate Danish Tax on a 2026 Salary

Enter your gross annual salary in kroner and choose a municipal tax rate. The estimate applies the 8% labor-market contribution, the employment allowance, the personal allowance, the municipal and bottom-bracket taxes, the three higher brackets and the tax ceiling, using the 2026 rates above, to the øre4111517117119120. Dollars use the Danmarks Nationalbank rate of October 2, 2026 (USD 1 = DKK 6.658)1.

A simplification, by our arithmetic from the rates and laws cited. It assumes the salary is your only income and that you are fully tax liable for the whole year. It leaves out church tax, the job allowance (at most DKK 3,100), pension contributions and other deductions, capital and share income, the special rules for very low incomes, the researcher scheme (see below), credits for U.S. tax and U.S. tax itself. Your preliminary income assessment from the Danish Tax Agency is the figure that counts.

Examples: 2026 tax on a salary at the 25.049% average municipal rate, without church tax, by our arithmetic.

Announced, not law. The government’s platform of June 2026 says it will propose abolishing the middle-bracket and additional top-bracket taxes, raising the threshold for the 27% rate on share income to DKK 110,000, capping the interest deduction, freezing tax thresholds for two years and reshaping the inheritance tax21. As of October 4, 2026 we found no bill on the Ministry of Taxation’s news list22. The figures on this page are the rules in force in October 2026; if a reform passes, some 2027 figures may change.

The researcher and key-employee scheme

If you meet its conditions, your gross earned income is taxed at a flat 32.84%, the 8% labor-market contribution plus 27%, for up to seven years, with no deductions against that income37. Key employees need a guaranteed monthly salary of at least DKK 65,400 in 2026, about $9,823, down from DKK 78,000 in 2025; the floor is DKK 67,300 for 2027 under current law372728. Researchers are covered instead through their research credentials and an approval37.

  • The 10-year rule: you must not have been fully or partly liable to Danish tax on earned income in the 10 years before the job; your tax liability must start with the job, though you may arrive up to a month early121.
  • The 30-day rule: the conditions must be met throughout, and the right to tax your salary may not pass to another country for more than 30 days in a calendar year37.
  • You can leave the scheme only with effect for a full income year37.

Pensions, Social Security and retirement accounts

The saving clause, and what it does not touch. Article 1(4) of the treaty lets each country tax its own residents, and the United States its citizens, as if the treaty had not come into effect. Article 1(5)(a) lists exceptions, among them paragraphs 1(c), 2 and 5 of article 18 on pensions and social security, and article 23 on relief from double taxation9.

  • U.S. Social Security paid to a resident of Denmark, or to a U.S. citizen, is taxable only in the United States (article 18(2)), and this is protected from the saving clause. Danish social security paid to a U.S. citizen is taxable only in Denmark9122.
  • Private pensions are taxed where the plan is, not where you live: pension distributions arising in one country and paid to a resident of the other are taxable only in the country where they arise, and a distribution arises in a country only if it is paid by a pension scheme established there, whether paid periodically or as a lump sum (article 18(1))9.
  • 401(k)s, IRAs and Roth IRAs are named as U.S. pension schemes in the treaty’s protocol: qualified plans under section 401(a), individual retirement plans including Roth IRAs, and section 403(a) and 403(b) plans9122.
  • How Denmark treats U.S.-only income: when a resident of Denmark has income the treaty makes taxable only in the United States, Denmark may include it in the tax base but must deduct the Danish tax attributable to it (article 23(3)(c)). In practice it can raise the rate on your other income9.
  • A Danish pension paid to a U.S. citizen living in Denmark can still be taxed by the United States under the saving clause, but the United States treats it as arising in Denmark for the foreign tax credit122.
  • The grandfather rule: someone who already lived in one country and received pension distributions from the other before the treaty took effect is taxable on them only in the country of residence9.
  • Investment income: the treaty limits tax on portfolio dividends at source to 15%, and interest is taxable only in the country of residence (articles 10 and 11)9111.

A question for your tax adviser, not a rule we can state. We found no Danish Tax Agency guidance on U.S. plans specifically, and we did not check how Denmark treats contributions to a U.S. plan while you live in Denmark, or rollovers9. Settle the treatment of your accounts, and whether to take anything out before you move, with an adviser who knows both systems.

Inheritance, gift and wealth taxes

  • Estate tax (boafgift): 15% on what close relatives inherit, after an allowance of DKK 392,300 per estate in 2026 (DKK 403,700 in 2027), plus an additional 25% on inheritances to people who are not close relatives. Spouses pay none123.
  • Gift tax: 15% on gifts to children, stepchildren, grandchildren, parents and similar above DKK 80,600 a year in 2026 (DKK 83,000 in 2027); gifts to step-parents and grandparents are taxed at 36.25%, and gifts between spouses are tax-free123.
  • Wealth tax: we found none among the taxes in the ministry’s tables, and none in the government’s June 2026 list of planned tax changes1721.
  • Property taxes: see buying34.

Social Security contributions and the totalization agreement

The main Danish levy on pay is the 8% labor-market contribution41. The U.S.–Denmark agreement covers, for Denmark, the social pension (folkepension) and the labor-market supplementary pension, ATP124.

  • Sent by a U.S. employer: if the work in Denmark is not expected to last more than five years, you stay under U.S. Social Security only, with a certificate of coverage. Workers exempted from Danish coverage pay no Danish social security taxes for these programs and generally cannot receive benefits from them125124.
  • Self-employed: covered only by the country where they reside; a self-employed American living in Denmark is in the Danish system and attaches the certificate of coverage to the U.S. return each year as proof of exemption from U.S. self-employment tax125124.
  • Danish pension: under the agreement a U.S. national can get the Danish social pension after three years of residence and at least one year of work in Denmark124.

Questions to take to your tax adviser
  • On which date will I become fully tax liable in Denmark, and does my former U.S. state still treat me as resident?
  • Do I meet every condition of the researcher scheme, including the 10-year rule, and is it better for me than ordinary tax?
  • How will Denmark count my 401(k), IRA and Roth IRA withdrawals under article 23(3)(c), and how are contributions and rollovers treated while I live here?
  • Which Social Security system covers my work, and do I need a certificate of coverage?
  • Do I owe Danish property value tax on my U.S. home, and how is U.S. property tax credited?
  • If the announced tax reform becomes law, how does it change my 2027 tax?
Renting and buying

Lease Rules, Buying With Permission, and Short-Term Rentals

Renting under the Rent Act

Residential leases are governed by the Rent Act (lejeloven), Act 341 of March 22, 2022, with its later amendments39.

  • Money up front: a deposit of at most three months’ rent, plus prepaid rent of at most three months, so up to six months in all39.
  • Notice: the general notice period is three months, to the first working day of a month; one month for a room in the landlord’s own home39.
  • The landlord’s grounds: outside such special cases, a landlord can end a lease only on the grounds the Act lists, such as needing the home for their own use, and must then give at least one year’s notice39.
  • Fixed-term leases end without notice when the term runs out, but the time limit must be justified by the landlord’s circumstances39.
  • Rent control depends on the building: in older buildings, rent is cost-based; in buildings first used after December 31, 1991, rent can be agreed freely. Index-linked increases follow the net price index39. A temporary 4% cap applied only to increases based on the index for 2022 and 2023132.
  • No registration needed: a tenant’s rights under the Act are valid against everyone without registration of the lease39.
  • Practical points: report defects within 14 days of moving in, report your new address no later than five days after moving, and use the ministry’s standard lease, which is published in English85. Since January 1, 2026 tenants have a right to install an electric-vehicle charging point133.

Buying: permission first

Unless you are resident in Denmark in the sense of the Acquisition Act, or have lived there for at least five years, you need permission from the Civil Affairs Agency (Civilstyrelsen) to buy real property43. Non-EU citizens get permission only for a specific property, as a permanent home, and must be lawfully resident; the agency cannot give a general permission in advance. If you move out within five years, you may be ordered to sell within six months134. A second home needs especially strong ties to Denmark43.

  • Registering the deed: 0.6% of the price plus DKK 1,850, in both 2026 and 202732.
  • Registering a mortgage: 1.25% plus DKK 1,825, in both 2026 and 2027, after a reduction on January 1, 202632.
  • Property value tax on a home you own: 0.51% up to DKK 9,007,000 and 1.4% above, on the public assessment minus 20%, at the rates set for 2026 and 2027; it is paid through your tax assessment34135.
  • Land tax (grundskyld) is a municipal rate on the land value minus 20%, at most 30 per mille; in 2026 it ranges from 3.10 per mille in Frederiksberg to 17.70 in Varde. Since 2024 the state collects it34135114.
  • A home you keep in the United States is also subject to Danish property value tax while you are resident in Denmark136. Ask an adviser how U.S. property tax is credited.

By our arithmetic, the two registration fees on a DKK 3,000,000 purchase with a DKK 2,400,000 mortgage come to DKK 19,850 for the deed and DKK 31,825 for the mortgage32.

What property costs

Statistics Denmark publishes average sale prices and a price index by province (landsdel), not by town; it publishes no price per square meter in this table13744. Prices of owner-occupied apartments rose 16.1% nationally and 18.9% in the city of Copenhagen in the year to the second quarter of 2026; one-family houses rose 8.4% nationally44.

Average price per property sold in ordinary free-market sales, by province: second quarter of 2026 and the year 2025, with the change in the price index from the second quarter of 2025. Checked October 4, 2026.

Short-term rentals

If you rent out your own full-time home for holidays, you may do so for at most 30 days a calendar year, or 70 days if every rental goes through a platform that reports your income to the tax authority; a municipality may raise the limit to up to 100 days138. The EU regulation on data sharing for short-term rentals, (EU) 2024/1028, has applied since May 20, 2026139. As of October 4, 2026 we found no Danish law implementing a national registration scheme for it; ask the municipality before you rent to tourists.

Ten Towns, Compared on Official Numbers

Denmark had 6,031,699 residents on July 1, 2026140. We compare ten towns below on population140141, social-housing rents90 and their health region, which changes for four of them on January 1, 202713. Our groupings are starting points for a scouting trip, not verdicts.

Capital and U.S. Embassy

Copenhagen has 670,389 people in the municipality, by far the largest in our table140. The U.S. Embassy is there142. Its prices are the highest in our tables: apartments in the Byen København province averaged DKK 6.17 million in the second quarter of 2026137, and average earnings in the Capital Region were DKK 57,773 a month in 202591. Frederiksberg, a separate municipality of 105,947, has the lowest land tax rate in Denmark in 2026, 3.10 per mille140114.

Consider: Copenhagen · Frederiksberg

The Second City

Aarhus has 378,270 people in the municipality and 305,227 in the town itself140141. The median social-housing rent for a family dwelling of 70 to 85 m² is DKK 6,477 a month90. A 30-day pass for one to two zones costs DKK 43595.

Consider: Aarhus

Lower Rents

Esbjerg, Odense, Kolding and Vejle have the lowest median social-housing rents in our table, DKK 5,424 to 5,858 a month for a family dwelling of 70 to 85 m²90. In Odense, Esbjerg and Kolding the Danish Meteorological Institute’s stations show July means of 16.6°C to 17.3°C by our arithmetic143.

Consider: Odense · Esbjerg · Kolding

Two Smaller Towns in the East

Roskilde (93,142), in Region Zealand until December 31, 2026, and Helsingør (64,460), in the Capital Region until then, are the smallest municipalities in our table14013. Both have higher social-housing rents than Copenhagen in our table: DKK 8,164 and 7,434 a month for a family dwelling of 70 to 85 m²90. Both will be in Region Østdanmark from January 1, 202713.

Climate

As of October 4, 2026, the Danish Meteorological Institute (DMI) had not published official 1991–2020 climate normals for its stations; it said it would release them “at the end of 2026”. Once they are out, use them in place of our station averages below. Its preliminary national figures give a mean temperature of 8.7°C (48°F) for the year, 2.0°C in winter and 16.1°C in summer144. The station figures below are our own averages of DMI’s open observation data for 1991–2020, not official normals143.

Mean temperatures 1991–2020 at DMI stations, by our arithmetic from DMI observations; the last column is the number of years with data. Not official normals. Checked October 4, 2026.

By our arithmetic from DMI observations143; the station used for each town is the choice of our researcher, and the Aarhus series covers only 19 to 20 of the 30 years. We found no station with 1991–2020 data for Helsingør or Vejle. Station rainfall data cover too few years to average, so we give DMI’s national 1981–2010 figure instead: 746 mm (29 in) a year144. Fahrenheit and inch conversions are our arithmetic. Compare Denmark with other destinations.

Practical matters

Paperwork: CPR Number, Banks, Driving and Pets

Your CPR number and MitID

If you stay for more than three months, you register in the civil registration system (CPR) at an International Citizen Service center, in Copenhagen, Aarhus, Odense, Aalborg, Esbjerg or Sønderborg, or at your local Citizen Service. ICS East, at International House Copenhagen, Nyropsgade 1, works by booked appointment and also issues MitID78. As a non-EU citizen you need your residence permit first79. If you move, report the new address no later than five days after moving85.

MitID, the national digital ID, can be created in the MitID app by scanning a passport with a chip, on an iPhone 7 or newer or a recent Android phone, or at Citizen Service. Without a CPR number you use a “P code”82.

Your tax card

Without a tax card, 55% is withheld from your salary. The Danish Tax Agency cannot generate your tax card until one month before you start work, and you do not need a CPR number to apply for one8378.

A bank account and NemKonto

Every resident names a NemKonto, a Danish or foreign account for public payments such as tax refunds; it requires a CPR number and is free. A foreign account needs a signed form with two witnesses or a notary. Banks may ask U.S. citizens for their Social Security card84. Danish banks must offer a basic payment account to consumers legally resident in the EU, and may refuse only in five specific situations84145. Under the Pay Limit Scheme your salary must be paid into a Danish account8.

Driving on a U.S. license

You may drive on a license from outside the EU and EEA for up to 180 days after you take up normal residence in Denmark; after that you must exchange it86. The USA is a “group 2” country, so a car (category B) license can be exchanged without a driving test, if it is valid and you declare on oath that you have held and used a category B license for the last two years and have had no disqualification in the last five. Other categories, such as a motorcycle license, need a control test in category B. The rule covers the whole USA; the page lists no state-by-state exceptions40.

Bringing a car is expensive: the 2026 registration tax on a private car is 25% of the first DKK 76,400, 85% of the value from DKK 76,400 to DKK 237,400, and 150% of the rest, the part above DKK 237,400, plus surcharges for CO2 emissions45.

Pets

New EU rules for traveling with pets apply from April 22, 202623. A dog, cat or ferret coming from the United States needs146:

  1. A microchip, then a valid rabies vaccination, given when the animal was at least 12 weeks old and at least 21 days before travel. The United States is on the EU list for which no rabies antibody test is needed146.
  2. An EU animal health certificate that follows Annex III of Regulation (EU) 2026/705, issued or endorsed by the competent authority of the country you leave from146.
  3. Entry through one of three approved entry points for pets from outside the EU: Copenhagen Airport (Kastrup), Billund Airport, or Aalborg Airport (dogs and cats only). Entering anywhere else in Denmark from outside the EU is forbidden; if you enter the EU through another EU country, the check is done there147.
  4. Notice to the entry point at least 24 hours ahead is recommended; Denmark charges no fee for the check146.
  5. At most five dogs, cats or ferrets per vehicle, a limit new from April 22, 202623.
  6. Registration of a dog in the Danish Dog Register within four weeks of import146.

Thirteen dog breeds are banned, tourists included, and no dispensation is possible (dogs in transit are exempt): pit bull terrier, Tosa inu, American Staffordshire terrier, Fila brasileiro, Dogo argentino, American bulldog, Boerboel, Kangal, Central Asian ovtcharka, Caucasian ovtcharka, South Russian ovtcharka, Tornjak and Sarplaninac, and crosses of them148. We found no Danish page on whether certificates in the old format, issued before April 22, 2026, are still accepted; ask the Danish Veterinary and Food Administration.

Shipping your household

Your household goods enter free of duty and VAT when you move your normal residence from outside the EU, if you have lived outside the EU for at least 12 months in a row, use the goods for the same purpose, and import them no later than 12 months after moving (at the earliest six months before, if you lodge security for the duty and VAT). You may not lend, pledge, rent out or sell them for 12 months after import; alcohol, tobacco and commercial vehicles are excluded149. Goods must have been owned and, if not consumable, used for at least six months before the move150. Your shipper files the import declaration, and you send form 12.024, the declaration of household goods, to the customs office named on it149151.

Schools

Municipal schools (folkeskole) are free152. The consolidated Folkeskole Act of September 5, 2025 sets education as compulsory from August 1 of the year a child turns six, for every child living in Denmark and for children staying at least six months152. You may choose a school if it has space, and enrollment is digital through the municipality153. About 15% of pupils attend private schools154, and English is taught from the first grade155. We did not check international or English-language programs in the public system; ask the municipality.

Your U.S. services, and emergencies

  • The U.S. Embassy in Copenhagen is at Dag Hammarskjölds Allé 24, 2100 København Ø, telephone +45 33 41 71 00; there is also a U.S. Consulate in Nuuk, Greenland142.
  • Passport renewals can take up to four weeks, and emergency passports are available156. Notarial services are by appointment only, with no walk-ins157.
  • In an emergency, call 112101. For urgent illness outside your doctor’s hours, see the regional numbers in the health section.
Entry rules

Before the Permit: Visiting Under Schengen, EES and ETIAS

Denmark has been an EU member since 1973 and in the Schengen area since 20013. U.S. citizens do not need a visa. If you travel visa-free, you may stay in the Schengen area, together with Greenland and the Faroe Islands, for at most 90 days in any 180-day period46. Your passport must be valid for three months after the day you plan to leave the Schengen area and must have been issued within the last ten years, and as a general rule you should have about DKK 350 a day at your disposal46.

A bilateral extra, with a caution. Under a bilateral rule, U.S. citizens may stay in Denmark for up to three months from their first entry into Denmark, regardless of time spent in other Schengen countries before, minus any days in Denmark in the previous six months46. We found no official page explaining how the EU’s Entry/Exit System applies this rule at the border since April 10, 2026; check with the Danish Immigration Service before you rely on it.

Since April 10, 2026 (after a gradual start on October 12, 2025), the EU’s Entry/Exit System (EES) has recorded your entries and exits instead of passport stamps24. Once you hold a Danish residence permit, you are not registered in the EES; you show the permit with your passport158.

As of October 4, 2026, ETIAS, the EU travel authorization for visa-free visitors, is not in operation, and no start date has been set; the EU says it will announce the date several months ahead. Its fee has been set at EUR 20159160. Under the ETIAS regulation, travelers under 18 and over 70 are exempt from the fee, and an authorization is valid for three years or until the passport expires161. Holders of a residence permit will not need it161.

Timeline

A Realistic Twelve Months

Built backwards from the rules above, for a Pay Limit Scheme permit, where SIRI’s normal processing time is one month and the longest three; the plan assumes three. Family and descent permits can take up to ten months, so start those earlier. Your own dates depend on your route and on how quickly your documents come together.

Months 12–9

Decide and test

Choose the route and run the salary check. Book a session with a cross-border tax adviser about your 401(k), IRA and pensions, and ask whether the researcher tax scheme could apply to you. Plan a scouting trip within your 90 visa-free days.

Months 9–6

Land the job

Get a written job offer that states the salary, the hours (at least 30 a week) and what counts toward the pay limit. Start pet preparations: microchip first, then the rabies vaccination, which counts only from 21 days after it is given. List the household goods you have owned and used for at least six months.

Months 6–4

Apply

Apply online, pay the fee and give biometrics at a VFS Global center within 14 days. Allow up to three months for the decision. Meanwhile, research neighborhoods and rents, and the waiting lists for social housing.

Months 3–1

Prepare the move

Once the permit is granted, line up a first address and a lease, and arrange your tax card no earlier than a month before work starts. Book your pet’s entry through Copenhagen, Billund or Aalborg Airport, and, as recommended, notify the entry point 24 hours ahead.

Arrival

Register

Register for your CPR number, then watch for your health card, set up MitID, open a Danish bank account and register your NemKonto. Register a dog in the Danish Dog Register within four weeks.

By month 12

License and returns

Exchange your U.S. license within 180 days of taking up residence. Report your foreign accounts, pensions and income in your Danish tax return by July 1 of the following year. Put the U.S. return (June 15 for Americans abroad) and FBAR on the calendar.

Questions

What Americans Ask Us About Denmark

Does Denmark have a retirement visa?

No. The official list of application types, read on October 4, 2026, has no retirement, passive-income or “own means” permit; the only retiree category is for retired employees of international organizations in Denmark who are over 60 and have lived there for more than 12 years662. Retirees without a Danish spouse or Danish roots have no dedicated route.

How much do I need to earn for a Danish work permit?

Under the Pay Limit Scheme, at least DKK 552,000 a year at the 2026 level, about $82,908, in any field8. The Supplementary Pay Limit Scheme needs DKK 446,000, with extra conditions47. Both are adjusted each January 1; the 2027 amounts had not been published as of October 4, 20268.

Can I work remotely from Denmark for my U.S. employer?

Denmark has no digital nomad permit, and the general rule is that a foreign national who will be working in Denmark must have a work permit763. We found no official page that says whether remote work for a U.S. employer during a visa-free stay counts; ask SIRI before you do it.

Can I get an EU Blue Card in Denmark?

No. Under its opt-out, Denmark is not bound by the EU Blue Card Directive4, and SIRI lists no Blue Card scheme; it uses its own schemes, such as the Pay Limit Scheme78.

How long can I stay in Denmark without a visa?

Up to 90 days in any 180-day period in the Schengen area46. A bilateral rule also lets U.S. citizens stay in Denmark for up to three months from first entry into Denmark, regardless of earlier stays in other Schengen countries, minus Danish days in the previous six months46. We found no official page on how the Entry/Exit System applies that rule, so check with the Danish Immigration Service before relying on it.

Will Denmark tax my U.S. Social Security or 401(k)?

Under article 18 of the U.S.–Denmark treaty, U.S. Social Security paid to a resident of Denmark is taxable only in the United States, and so are distributions from pension schemes established in the United States, which the 1999 protocol says include 401(a) plans, IRAs and Roth IRAs9. Denmark may count such income when it sets the rate on your other income, but must deduct the Danish tax attributable to it9. Ask a cross-border adviser how this works for your accounts.

Do I get public health care?

Yes, once you are registered in the CPR: Denmark’s public health insurance is residence-based35. As a non-EU citizen you need a residence permit before you can get a CPR number79. In group 1, family doctor and specialist care are free36.

Can Americans buy property in Denmark?

Only with permission from the Civil Affairs Agency, unless you are resident in Denmark in the sense of the Acquisition Act or have lived there for at least five years43. Non-EU citizens get permission only for a specific property, as a permanent home, and must be lawfully resident134.

Can I drive on my U.S. license?

For up to 180 days after you take up normal residence; then you must exchange it. The USA is a “group 2” country, so a car (category B) license can be exchanged without a driving test if it is valid and you declare that you have held and used it for the last two years with no disqualification in the last five8640.

How long until I can become a Danish citizen, and can I keep my U.S. passport?

The circular in force requires nine years of uninterrupted residence and two years of permanent residence, which itself normally comes after eight years7111. As of October 4, 2026, applications are generally not being processed until the post-election conditions are clear12. Denmark has allowed dual citizenship since September 1, 201538.

What changes on January 1, 2027?

Region Hovedstaden and Region Sjælland merge into Region Østdanmark13; the collective-agreement Pay Limit Scheme takes effect15; and, unless Parliament passes the announced reform first, the 2027 tax thresholds already set under current law apply, such as a DKK 55,700 personal allowance17. The government has announced a further tax reform, but as of October 4, 2026 it is not law21.
