Fifteen Countries. One Right Answer — Yours.

Europe isn't one decision; it's a hundred small ones. Language, cost, climate, healthcare, taxes, residency. We've mapped the countries where Americans genuinely thrive — so you can compare honestly and choose deliberately.

How to Choose

Four Questions That Decide Everything

What will you live on?

Pension, Social Security, remote salary, business income, savings. Your income type determines which visas are open to you — retiree routes, digital nomad permits, entrepreneur treaties, or independent-means visas. This single question eliminates more countries than any other.

What's your monthly number?

A couple can live well on roughly €2,000–2,500 a month in inland Portugal, Greece, or Croatia — while Zurich, Dublin, and Amsterdam rival or exceed U.S. big-city prices. Know your realistic budget early, and let it draw the map.

Will you learn the language?

Be honest with yourself. Ireland and Malta run on English; the Netherlands nearly does. Portugal, Spain, and Greece are forgiving in expat areas. Rural France, Italy, Germany, and Austria will expect more of you — and reward you more, too.

What does a good day look like?

Island light or grand boulevards? Alpine order or Mediterranean improvisation? Village market or metro line? The move succeeds only if ordinary Tuesday afternoons — not the postcard — fit who you actually are.
