Iceland Relocation Guide
Everything on our Iceland page, taken further and turned into a working file: an 84-page guide with document lists by route from the Directorate of Immigration’s own checklists and application forms, the means test and fees for your household, the foreign-expert tax deduction and the stamp duty worked out, and a month-by-month plan; an Excel workbook that does the arithmetic; and a Word checklist you check off as you go. Every rule and official figure is taken from, or calculated from, an official source, 138 of them, checked between September 25 and October 9, 2026, and every figure that changes is dated, with the place to check it; the worked households use assumed incomes, labeled as such.

What You Get Beyond the Free Page
Our Iceland page is free and stays free. The guide adds the parts you need when you actually start the paperwork.
| Chapter or tool | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Three worked households | A retired couple moving near their daughter in Kópavogur on the permit for parents aged 67 or older, a remote-working couple with two children who move on his job offer to Reykjavík, and a single early retiree for whom Iceland has no route, each taken through the route the rules point to, or that none does, the tests line by line, the first-year fees and the monthly lines with an official figure (composite examples: their incomes and savings are assumptions, not real clients). |
| First-year cost plan | The Directorate’s fees, the legal limits and the official references, and the monthly running costs, with a column for your own figures; it matches the workbook, and it says plainly where no official figure exists, such as a private health insurance premium. |
| Document tracker and month-by-month plan | Each document by route with where to get it and any validity, apostille or translation rule an official source states, plus a plan from 12 months before the move to 3 months after, as checklists in Word. |
| Document lists by route | Americans need no visa, and first applications go on paper to the Directorate of Immigration: the guide sets out the Directorate’s own checklists for a work permit, a spouse or partner, children, a parent aged 67 or older, a student and the short-term permit, its rules on apostilles and translations, and what the offices ask for after the decision, each dated to the day we read it. |
| Your household’s numbers | The means-of-support amounts for one to four adults, a month and for a year’s permit, and the Directorate’s fees for one or two adults and up to three children, in krónur and dollars. |
| Purchase costs and the expert deduction, worked | The stamp duty at five assessed values, what each amount buys at the median prices of October 2025 to September 2026, and the yearly property tax; and what the 25% foreign-expert deduction is worth at five wages over one and three years. |
| Numbers, deadlines and glossary | Emergency numbers in the official wording, the offices you will deal with, the deadlines that repeat, and the local terms you will meet. |

Made For
- Americans who have chosen Iceland, or narrowed it to Iceland and one other country.
- People with an offer from an Icelandic employer for work that needs their expertise, and the families moving with them.
- People married to an Icelander or to someone who lives in Iceland, students, and parents aged 67 or older of an adult child who lives there.
- Anyone who wants to arrive at a lawyer’s or tax adviser’s office already knowing the rules.
What It Is Not
- Legal, tax or immigration advice. It explains the rules in general; your case needs your advisers.
- A retirement, investor or remote-work visa: the Directorate’s list of permits has none, and the guide says so, with the routes a job, a spouse or an adult child in Iceland can open.
- Self-employment: the law bars a foreign national from working as self-employed unless exempt from the work-permit requirement, as permanent residents are.

Questions About the Guide
How is the guide different from your free Iceland page?
The page explains the rules; the guide is built for doing the work. It adds three worked household examples, a first-year cost plan, a document tracker and a month-by-month plan, document lists by route, the means test and fees for your household, the stamp duty and the foreign-expert deduction worked out, deadlines, a glossary and key numbers, plus the Excel workbook and the Word checklists.
How current is it?
The Icelandic sources of our Iceland page were read on October 8, 2026, some U.S. federal and EU sources on September 25 and October 7, and those added for the guide on October 9; each figure is numbered to its source, which is marked with the day it was read. Every figure that changes carries its date and the official place to check it, and the guide says which change on a fixed calendar, such as the tax rates and the personal tax credit each January 1. Each edition is dated; a later edition is a new purchase. If you find an error in your file, we send a corrected copy free.
Does Iceland have a retirement visa?
No. The Directorate of Immigration’s list of permits has no retirement, own-means or investor permit. The one route for a retiree without a spouse in Iceland is the permit for a parent aged 67 or older of an adult child who lives there, which a draft bill under consultation as of October 8, 2026 may change. The guide sets this out, with a worked example of a retired couple moving near their daughter and an early retiree for whom Iceland has no route.
Does the guide cover the work permit?
Yes: the permit for work requiring expert knowledge and the other work permits, what the Directorate’s checklist asks you and your employer to send, the means test and fees in 2026, the processing times it published, the family’s applications and their fees, the 25% foreign-expert tax deduction, and a worked example of a family moving on an Icelandic job offer.
Is it legal or tax advice?
No. Quantum Jetset does not give legal, tax, immigration, financial or investment advice. The guide explains how the rules work in general and lists the questions to take to a licensed lawyer and a cross-border tax adviser.
