Germany Relocation Guide

Everything on our Germany page, taken further and turned into a working file: an 86-page guide with document lists by route from the German missions’ checklists and Berlin’s immigration office, the 2026 salary floors and the fees for your household, transfer tax in seven states and the notary and land-registry fees at five prices, and a month-by-month plan built around applying inside Germany within 90 days; an Excel workbook that does the arithmetic; and a Word checklist you check off as you go. Every rule and official figure is taken from, or calculated from, an official source, 173 of them, checked on September 25 and 26, 2026; the worked households use assumed incomes, labeled as such.

What You Get Beyond the Free Page

Our Germany page is free and stays free. The guide adds the parts you need when you actually start the paperwork.

Chapter or toolWhy it matters
Three worked householdsA retired couple on Social Security and a company pension, a remote-working couple with two children, and a single early retiree on investment income, each taken through the route the rules point to, the first-year fees and the monthly lines with an official figure (composite examples: their incomes and savings are assumptions, not real clients).
First-year cost planThe permit and visa fees and the legal limits, and the monthly running costs with their official references, with a column for your own figures; it matches the workbook.
Document tracker and month-by-month planEach document by route with where to get it, its validity and any apostille or translation rule an official source states, plus a plan from 12 months before the move to 3 months after, built around the 90 days you have to apply, as checklists in Word.
Document lists by routeAmericans may enter visa-free and apply inside Germany, so the guide gives both lists: the German missions’ checklists for a visa before travel, and Berlin’s immigration office’s lists for an application in Germany, each dated to the version we read.
Your household’s numbersThe 2026 Blue Card and skilled-worker floors in euros and dollars as the Federal Ministry of the Interior published them, Berlin’s old-age benchmark, and the permit and visa fees for 1 to 4 adults and 0 to 3 children.
Transfer tax and fees, workedThe transfer tax rates of seven states, each verified from the state’s own sources, and the notary’s and land registry’s core fees, at five prices.
Remote work, said plainlyGerman law has no permit built for remote work for a U.S. employer; the guide sets out the routes the rules point to and the questions to take to a lawyer.
Numbers, deadlines and glossaryEmergency numbers in the official wording, U.S. and German mission contacts, the deadlines that repeat, and the German terms you will meet.

Made For

  • Americans who have chosen Germany, or narrowed it to Germany and one other country.
  • Retirees and people living on their savings, freelancers and founders.
  • People with a German job offer, and their partners and children.
  • Anyone who wants to arrive at a lawyer’s or tax adviser’s office already knowing the rules.

What It Is Not

  • Legal, tax or immigration advice. It explains the rules in general; your case needs your advisers.
  • A retirement visa or a digital nomad permit: we found neither in German law, and the guide says so.
  • A guide to other countries. Our Europe-wide planners work alongside it.

Questions About the Guide

How is the guide different from your free Germany page?

The page explains the rules; the guide is built for doing the work. It adds three worked household examples, a first-year cost plan, a document tracker and a month-by-month plan, document lists by route, your household’s salary floors and fees, transfer tax and notary fees worked out at five prices, deadlines, a glossary and key numbers, plus the Excel workbook and the Word checklists.

How current is it?

Every rule and official figure on our Germany page was checked against official sources on September 25, 2026, and the sources added for the guide’s own chapters were read on September 26; each is numbered to its source. Where we found no official figure, the guide says so. Each edition is dated; a later edition is a new purchase. If you find an error in your file, we send a corrected copy free.

Why two sets of document lists?

U.S. citizens may enter Germany visa-free and apply for the residence permit inside Germany within 90 days, or take a national visa first so they can work from the day they arrive. The guide gives the German missions’ checklists for the visa and Berlin’s immigration office’s lists for an application in Germany, and tells you to ask your own office for its list if you live elsewhere.

Is there a retirement or digital nomad visa?

No. Retirees use a discretionary permit for purposes the Residence Act does not otherwise provide for, with no figure in the law, and there is no permit built for remote work. The guide covers the routes that exist and says plainly where a situation has no route of its own.

Is it legal or tax advice?

No. Quantum Jetset does not give legal, tax, immigration, financial or investment advice. The guide explains how the rules work in general and lists the questions to take to a licensed lawyer and a cross-border tax adviser.

What if a file will not open?

If a file will not open, email us with your order number and we will put it right by sending you a working copy free of charge.

Will my card statement say Quantum Jetset?

It will show MEGACOMMERCIALENT, the payment name of Mega Commercial Enterprises Limited, the Irish company behind Quantum Jetset.

Quantum Jetset does not give legal, tax, immigration, financial or investment advice. The guide explains the rules in general, with official sources checked on September 25 and 26, 2026; check the source before you act and speak to a licensed professional where it matters.
